Shikousakugo means Trial and Error
This exhibition is part of the results of a project that a group of three artists have been working on together for nearly three years. The group is made up of Yoshi T; the make-up, Junko Shinbori; the nails and Hirohito Okayasu; the photography.

All these works were generated through trial and error. All the colors are “real”, analogue, and expertly applied; colored make-up applied directly to the models’ skin, colored nail varnish applied directly to the models’ nails. The background colors are from the colored paper hung in the studio set. None of the color was generated digitally, in photoshop. If the end result was not to the team’s satisfaction, all the make-up and varnish was removed, and they tried it all again. The result was hoped to be a deception or an illusion. The images are all of body parts. But, what body part? Or is it a body or is it a landscape? What is it? And the answer to this is totally subjective. It’s up to the beholder, with the beholder’s history and culture and preconceived beliefs playing a part in the final decision.

Shikousakugo is usually written in Japanese as 試行錯誤 which literally means “examination” (or more exactly; “try” and “do”), and “mistake” (or more exactly; “complication” and “error”), ie; “Trial and Error”. But the title of this exhibition is 視考錯誤; phonetically the same: “Shikousakugo”, but in a play on words this meaning is literally; “See” and “think”. Which is the objective of these artists; the works require audience participation. It is left up to the viewer as to what ideas or massages these images might convey. And so the questions that need answering are; “What do you see?” and “What do you think?”
